Summer Learning
As another school year comes to a close, we want to take a moment to thank you for your partnership in your child’s education. We are already looking forward to a fantastic upcoming year, and one of the ways we are preparing is by sending home summer math and ELA packets for all students entering grades 6 through 12.
You may be wondering why we are assigning summer work. We’d like to share three important reasons.
First, summer learning loss is real—especially in math and ELA. Research shows that students can lose up to two to three months of their learned skills over the summer break. Without regular practice, important concepts and problem-solving strategies can fade, leaving students to spend precious weeks in the fall relearning old material instead of moving ahead. Our summer packet is designed to keep those skills sharp and prevent that “summer slide.”
Second, completing the packet will help your child feel more confident and prepared on the first day of school. When students review key concepts over the summer, they return in the fall ready to build on a solid foundation. Instead of struggling to remember how to solve equations or analyze a text, they’ll be able to jump right into new topics with understanding and ease. This head start often leads to greater success and less frustration throughout the year.
Third, we want to reward students for taking responsibility for their learning. Any student who turns in the completed summer packets by the assigned due date (first week of school) will receive:
A 100% project grade in their math and ELA class for the first marking period
50 PBIS points for both the math and ELA packets for 100 points total
These rewards recognize the effort and dedication it takes to keep learning even when school is out. We want students to see that hard work pays off right from the start.

How you can help:
We know summer is a time for rest, family, and fun. We are not asking for hours of daily drill. Instead, we encourage your child to work on the packet a little at a time over the summer—perhaps one page a week. This steady, manageable pace is far more effective than trying to complete the entire packet the night before school starts.
Please help us by:
Setting a regular, low-stress time each week for packet work.
Checking in to see how they’re progressing.
Encouraging them to try each page on their own first, then reaching out to a classmate or using online resources if they get stuck.
Celebrating small milestones along the way.
The summer packet will be sent home with your child the final week of school. It will also be available on the school website under the “Summer Learning” section, found under the Students and Parents tab . Middle school students should turn in the completed packet to your child’s math and ELA teachers by Friday, August 7, 2026. High school students should turn in the completed packet to Mrs. L Johnson (math), Mr. Malmgren (ELA) or the front office by Friday, August 7, 2026.
Thank you for partnering with us to help your child retain their skills, start the year strong, and earn a well-deserved reward. Together, we can make next school year their best one yet.
Wishing you a safe, restful, and productive summer.
Sincerely,
The CCMHS Math & ELA Departments
